Meet the Woolly Bear Caterpillar – Day 9 of #30DaysWild

Day 9 of #30DaysWild was all thanks to spotting a caterpillar whilst Robin and Dada were on a walk.

This hairy wriggly thing can really cover some ground quickly! Watch Robin tell Dada about what happens to the caterpillar in the video below.

I have to say when I was working and got sent that video it made my day. How cute and how clever of Robin to know the lifecycle of a butterfly. He even said to his dad “oh wow mumma would love this!”, and he was right.

As soon as they got home from their walk Robin came running up to see me shouting he had to show me something and it was the above video.

But what was this hairy caterpillar? And what would it turn into?

I grabbed my RSPB Wildlife book and sat down with Robin to find out. We looked through all the moth and butterfly pages checking the caterpillar illustrations. After finding what we thought it was I quickly consulted Google to confirm. They had found the caterpillar of a Garden Tiger Moth also known as the Woolly Bear.

What a beautiful moth, I’d love to see this in real life. That video of the caterpillar moving really does bring me joy, I keep watching it and every time I smile 😍 It’s the simple things ❤️
