An Adventure At Sea – Day 25 of 30 Days Wild

Day 25 of 30 Days Wild is about our boating adventure from Elgol in the Isle of Skye to the Isle of Canna.

Elgol is situated in the south west of the Isle of Skye and the road to it is considered to be one of the most dramatic on the island. We were heading to Elgol for a boat trip which was going to take us out to Canna past Sanday, Soay and Rum spotting wildlife along the way.

The drive didn’t disappoint! It was breathtaking some of the scenery we saw. Not for the nervous driver most of the roads were single track with passing places or hidden corners and steep climbs.

Once we arrived in Elgol you got the most amazing view over to the Cuillins across the water.

Our boat trip was through a company called AquaXplore. We signed up to the Puffin Run/Small Isles Tour which took us out on the AquaXplore boat, a RIB boat. We were kitted out with water and windproof clothing, resembling trawlermen as there was no option to take cover on the boat.

The trip lasted 4 hours and took us out across the water towards Canna. We headed to the north end of the island which attracts lots of seabirds such as Puffins, Gullimots, Razorbills, Lesser Black Back Gulls, Skuas and Shags. It was amazing to see so many birds on the island. We had puffins swarming above out heads going out into the the sea to catch fish for their young. It was amazing to be in the centre of all the action and get up so close to them.

We then headed over to the south of the island where we docked and had an hour to wander around Canna and have our lunch.

Our journey back took us past a seal colony and past Rum.

After such a smooth ride over to Canna it was a little choppier on the water on the way back. Let’s just say I was thankful for the funky outfit as multiple waves kept spraying up in my face on the way back. I seemed to be the only person getting soaked, but I have to say that was part of the fun!

Once back on shore we had a little explore of the Elgol bay taking in the magnificent view to the Cuillins. The rocks on shore also had some interesting erosion patterns called Honeycomb weathering.
